Dinesh Sasan beat a team of 220 golfers to emerge the overall winner in the 2023 Sunset Golfing society golf tournament staged at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa County on Saturday.
The Club Captain playing off handicap 14 beat all odds including intermittent showers throughout the day to card an excellent 41 stable ford points from 20 and 21 points in both nines to claim the lead in the day long 18 holes tournament and register his maiden victory after many years.
“I have always been shooting my golf balls to the bush but after getting some golf tips from our Club Trainer William Kaguta, today I was able to play best golf ever. Thank you golfers for attending in large numbers but special thanks goes to the organizer the Sunset golfing Society for bringing the event to this Club and all the sponsors. “Said Sasan.
AAR ,Real Falcon,Tyson,Liberty Insurance,Stanbic Bank and Tourism fund jointly sponsored the tournament graced by home golfers, members of the Sunset golfing Society and others from across the Country with valid handicaps.
Handicap 3 Henry Kamau was the gross winner of the day after carding a four over par 75 gross and planning to turn Professional before the end of the year.
Sunset men winner on 40 points was handicap 18 Ken Ndede,five points ahead of handicap 8 Gad Opiyo who was the runners up.
Handicap 11 Bethwel Ogwayo settled for the third slot with a score of 34 points and taking the Sunset Division four men winner’s prize on 42 points was handicap Gordon Oburu.
Sunset Lady winner was handicap 36 Joan Kanjenjo who returned a score of 39 points while handicap 30 Elizabeth Akinyi on 39 points and handicap 43 Lydia Selestine with 37 points were the runners up and Division four Sunset Lady winners respectively.
Dan Mugambi playing off handicap 27 won the men prize was won with a score of 39 points and handicap 23 Edwin Kiptoo finished with a count back score of 38 points after tying on the same points with third placed handicap 26 Shafiq Makrani.
Handicap 35 Anne Cherop won the Nyali lady’s prize with 39 points beating handicap 21 Lydia Mokaya to the runners up slot by a single shot difference.
Youngster Aydan Jamal playing off handicap 26 recorded the day’s score of 43 points to win the best Junior prize while the best senior prize was won handicap 21 Jones Ndombi who had a score of 38 points.
Robert Muhita playing off handicap 39 won the best high handicapper’s Men prize after carding 40 points and the same for Lady was claimed by handicap 39 Lynette Oketch with her 41 points.
Nathan Ngweno was the longest drive men winner while Alyssa Jamal won the same for the lady and Joseph Lutta’s shot that landed two feet away from the 18th hole won him the nearest to the pin prize.
The event was also graced by the Sunset Golfing Society Chairman Eden Odhiambo and his Captain Felix Ochieng who thanked the club for hosting them with the large numbers of golfers turning up and the Sponsors for their support.
“We are thrilled and can assure that we shall be back next year in a much bigger way this time,” said the Leaders.
Odhiambo and Ochieng said the society formed some 27 years ago and draws most its members from the Nyanza region aims at fostering unity, networking and also focusing with Charity work for the less fortunate.
“ We also introducing Junior Golf programe through Schools to identify talents that will represent the Country in big tournaments like the Kenya Open, “they said.
Odhaimbo and Ochieng also announced that the next event will be at Royal Nairobi golf club in September while the grand finale dubbed “ festivals” will be staged in December at the Nyanza Golf club.
At the Vetlab Sport Club handicap 26 Joseph Kirui had a two way count back score of 41 points to emerge the overall winner of the ISK Golf tournament sponsored by the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya.
Kirui had tied on the same score with handicap 20 Vivek Vajpayee who was the Men winner and handicap 20 Philip Gow who settled for the men runners up slot.
The lady winner’s prize was scooped by handicap 36 Edah Wangui on 41 points while handicap 22 Sally Mundia brought 38points to settle for the runners up slot.
Francis Kimathi playing off handicap 22 carded 37 points to win the sponsor’s prize beating handicap 14 Abraham Samoei to the runners up slot by a three points difference.
The seniors winner was handicap 42 Leonard Munyua with 38points while handicap 31 Adrian Mwangi who carded 30 points and handicap 13 Ken Lucas on 30 points were the junior and guest winners respectively.

Wade Kilburn emerged as the overall winner of the seventh leg of the 2023 NCBA Golf Series, held at the par-72 Karen Country Club on Saturday.
The tournament, which witnessed an impressive turnout of over 200 golfers, showcased exceptional talent and fierce competition, solidifying its status as one of the premier golfing events in Kenya.
With an outstanding performance, Wade Kilburn secured the top spot with an impressive score of 76 gross.
His remarkable display of skill and precision throughout the tournament earned him well-deserved recognition as the top contender.
In the men’s category, Paul Kaguamba claimed victory with an impressive score of 77 gross and James Ngotho followed closely, showcasing his prowess on the course with a score of 78 gross points.
The women’s category witnessed a thrilling competition, with Louisa Gitau emerging as the champion, on a score of 88 gross points beating Eunice Maranya on countback.
The Nett categories was celebrated by Peter Munyiri and Susan Kihato where Peter emerged as the champion in the men’s category with 67 nett and Kihato claimed the ladies’ category on 67 nett.
Arman Sheikh showcased immense potential, securing victory with an impressive score of 81 gross points to win the junior prize.

Following the Karen event, all eyes will be on Uganda Golf Club as it prepares to host the eighth leg which will also be the first qualifier event in Uganda on 15th July 2023 and will then return to Kenya on 22nd July for the ninth leg which will be held at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

Harun Ndegwa was crowned the winner of the second leg of the Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) ‘Bank with us’ golf tournament which was hosted at the par 73 Kitale Golf Club, in Trans Nzoia County on Saturday.
The Kitale home player, Harun, playing off a handicap 17 in the first division, made good use of his current best ability and the exceptional fairways.
This resulted into an impressive total of 40 points to claim the title, beating his closest challenger, Dr. Richard Kiptum, on 35 points net standings.
Ndegwa’s victory was courtesy of 22 points at the front nine and 18 points at the back nine, crowning him the overall winner of the tournament.
“First, I would like to thank DTB for organizing such an excellent event. I bank with DTB Kitale and the good services I receive motivated me to give my best at the game. I am delighted to have emerged as the winner of the second tournament of this year’s DTB ‘bank with us’ golf edition, “said Ndegwa.
“The Kitale Golf course was well maintained with good fairways that enabled me to play competently to beat my opponents. I am looking forward to participating in more of the series and securing my title as the ultimate grand winner, “He added.
On the other hand, playing off handicap 36, Josephine Njeri won in the second division with 43 points overcoming her closest competitor, Ruth Kae who garnered 39 points.
In the division two category, Njeri carded 21 points at the front nine and 22 points at the back nine. Meanwhile, the Longest Drive Men was won by Philip Shiharsy with the Longest Drive Lady’s category going to Joyce Weche. The nearest to pin position was won by Pradip Shah.
