Kenya Ports Authority’s (KPA) men’s and women’s basketball teams returns home among the top teams in the just concluded 2025 Genocide Memorial Tournament (GMT) held in Kigali, Rwanda over the weekend.

This annual event featured top teams from the region, including representatives from Tanzania, Uganda, and Burundi and was played from April 25th to 27th in Kigali.
The KPA teams had a successful at the invitational tournament that was a critical part of both teams’ preparations for upcoming regional competitions, offering a chance to focus on areas of improvement and build resilience among players and coaching staff.
Hosts Rwanda’s REG women basketball team emerged winners after defeating Tanzania’s JKL Dolphins 65-61 at final played at Stadia Petit, in Kigali.
On Sunday, the KPA women’s team claimed third place with a resounding 72-48 victory over Rwanda’s Armée Patriotique Rwandaise (APR).
The Dockers took an early lead winning the first quarter 19-12 and extending their advantage to 38-17 at halftime and stayed ahead 56-40 after the third quarter before sealing the win.
KPA women maintained an average lead of 14 points throughout the game, collecting 28 rebounds, 48 points from assists, and recording 19 turnovers.
On the men’s side, KPA was narrowly defeated by Tanzania’s Dar City 68-65 in an entertaining match played at Kigali’s Petit Stade.

KPA Basketball Team Coach Antony Ojukwu said the Team has been exceptional, and are committed to performing better in the forth coming well in the tournament.
“My Team represented well both the authority and the Country in the competition and This tournament was particularly important as the team aims to reclaim titles,” he added.
KPA Women’s team Chairman John Nyamosi expressed his satisfaction with the team’s outstanding performance pointing out that this tournament is vital for the club as they prepare for upcoming regional and national competitions.
The tournament, organized by the Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA), honors the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and brings together top basketball teams from the region.
