The 3rd, NCBA Western Junior Open is all set at the par 72 Kakamega Sports Club Course in Kakamega County from Friday to Sunday in a 54 holes strokeplay challenge awaiting the next generation of talented Kenyan junior players.
This is World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) tournament hosted by the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) in partnership with NCBA, returns to Western Kenya with 84 of the Country’s best Juniors aged 21 and under.
They are expected to battle through a format of three rounds of 18 holes in medal play, with boys playing from the Kifaru Tees and girls from the Chui Tees and after round two, a cut will be applied for the top 33 players and ties to proceed to the finals.
As a WAGR event, the tournament offers valuable ranking points that could boost players’ chances of regional and international selection.
According to a press release from JGF, Players will be grouped into four classes with Class A featuring 19-21 Years, Class B 16-18 Years, Class C 14-15 Years and Class D 13 Years and Under.
It further says that Class leaders will be decided on the lowest gross aggregate over three rounds, while the overall Boy and Girl leaders will be crowned on the lowest gross score of the entire field.
With a maximum handicap index of 28.0 for boys and 36.0 for girls required for entry, the depth across all categories is expected to be strong.
If there are ties for 1st, in any age group or for the overall title, a three-hole playoff on holes 1, 2 and 9 will decide the winner, with sudden death to follow if needed.
Kakamega Sports Club is known for its tree-lined fairways and fast greens and course management will be key and with Caddies not permitted, players must carry their own bags or use trolleys while distance measuring devices are allowed under Rule 4.3, but advice from spectators is strictly prohibited.
For many in the field, a strong showing in Kakamega could be the springboard to national team trials and regional tours later in the year.
The Competition Committee, led by Club Captain Ronald Omondi and Chief Referee S.K. Mwaura, has also emphasized the JGF Code of Conduct saying that breaches can attract penalties from warnings to disqualification and serious misconduct could lead to a ban from future JGF events.
The officials said that beyond the trophies, the event is a key pathway event on the JGF calendar with Prizes that will go to the overall Boy and Girl winners, plus gross winner and runner-up in each age category while winners must be present at the prize-giving ceremony and a player cannot win more than one prize.
“Tee times will be communicated at least one day before play via JGF and club platforms, and players must register 30 minutes before their start, “said the Officials.
With NCBA’s continued backing, the Western Junior Open has grown into one of the flagship junior events outside Nairobi.
