The Port of Mombasa has once again witnessed a new record performance after container carrier MV ‘Lana’ handled 1548 containers within a shift of eight hours at berth number 22.
The performance by the Maersk vessel comes barely a week after MV Maersk Boston hit a record 1470 containers within a shift.
The Port has sustained back to back record performance which was set during the discharge of 1449 containers by ex CMA CGM Manta Ray, a CMA CGM vessel, in eight hours at berth 22 on May 19, 2023.
Meanwhile the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), East Africa Branch has expressed gratitude to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) for the continued support towards its activities.
ICS officials led by branch Chairman Mr. Elijah Mbaru said this when they paid a courtesy call on the KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto in his office at the KPA headquarters, Kipevu in Mombasa County.
The delegation congratulated Captain Ruto following his appointment to the position of MD.
“As ICS, we wish to thank you for welcoming us and to congratulate you. We are convinced that you are up to the task,” said the Chairman.
Mr. Mbaru said ICS currently has a membership of over 4000 individual members and 200 corporate members, out of which the East Africa Branch has 20 corporate members.
“Besides being an education center, we also do a lot of corporate social responsibility initiatives with the help of corporate sponsors such as KPA,” he added.
Deputy Chairman Ms.Tumaini Namoya noted that ICS has a good number of members working with KPA and thanked the Authority for the continued payment of their membership fees.
“We would like to continue working together because KPA remains the largest organization in the maritime and we value your support,” she added.
KPA’s Logistics officer, Albert Karisa, who is the Education Committee Chairman at ICS, said that because the Authority’s core business is majorly in the shipping, there’s need to make provision for staff from other Divisions to undertake trainings for capacity building.
The MD assured them of the Authority’s support saying for KPA to have global outlook ICS is a key ambassador.
“You can count on my support as we continue working together,” he added.
And a record 50 vessels will call the Port of Mombasa in the next 14days.
Motor vehicle units make up one of the major cargo commodities that will be handled during this period, with over 2000 units from six car carriers expected to be discharged.
The vessels that started list of berthing included Lana,Sparowhawks,Dios,STI Gladiator,Nord Marlin,Solomos,Al Salima, and Awie Salama while Lisa will be the last to call at the port on June,26th.
