The Kilifi County Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CarbonNation, an organization that works with development partners and governments in Africa and across the globe to invest in Mangrove restoration (Blue Carbon) and de-nitrogenification projects.
The County Governor Gideon Mung’aro said the County has the second largest Mangrove forest cover in Kenya and that his administration is committed to conserve and work with community groups by increasing this cover to enable them maximize on the economic and environmental benefits of the trees.

“To achieve this, we will work together with CarbonNation to restore mangrove forest through planting and working with the youth and CBOs to sustain them. Part of our conservation efforts will also include raising awareness and ensuring there is provision of alternative source of energy, and through this program we will be able to provide hundreds of energy saving jikos for the communities to reduce dependence on charcoal, “said Mung’aro.


He noted that Forest conservation and management is key in his manifesto, and that he is committed to collaborate and partner with all stakeholders to ensure they protect, preserve and benefit from this natural resource sustainably which also enable shall create job opportunities and improve the livelihoods of the Local people.

Also present during the occasion were CECM Department of Finance and Economic Planning Hon. John Raymond Ngala, CECM Department of Water, Environment, Natural resources and Climate change Hon. Omar Said Omar, County Attorney Mr. Henry Kazungu Luganje, and Chief Officer Department of Trade, Madam Lynne Farrah.

In another function, the County’s First Lady Susanne Mung’aro joined part of the County’s 59th, monthly cleanup exercise organized by members of the Progressive Welfare Association in the Malindi sub-County alongside other stakeholders across all sectors of the economy.

She said that a clean and well maintained environment speaks volumes about people’s values, sense of responsibility, and commitment to the well-being of every resident.
“It reflects our love for the stunning natural beauty that surrounds us and our desire to preserve it for generations to come, “said Susanne.

She pointed out that the exercise aims to restore Malindi to its glorious state and recognition as the cleanest town in the world while also keeping dirt away from the Oceans to protect Marine habitat.


“Further, I had an exciting time learning more about the Vasco da Gama Pillar, one of our historical monuments in Malindi Sub-County, Kilifi County. Change starts with every one of us. And in a dedicated move towards bolstering sea safety measures, Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro has taken steps to erect watch towers along the picturesque beaches of the region.


This strong display of commitment to disaster management and the safety of its citizens, the County’s Government through the Special program and Disaster Management unit has taken steps as its top priority to ensure the safety and well-being of the people of Kilifi.


“In a concerted effort to bolster safety measures along its picturesque coastline, the Special Program and Disaster Management unit has initiated an ambitious beach safety training program. The program focuses on equipping participants with essential skills in diving, search and rescue (SAR), and first aid, aiming to enhance their ability to effectively respond to and manage drowning incidents, “said Mung’aro.


The launch of this comprehensive training initiative officially opened by the Chief Officer Irene Opicho, Special Program and Disaster Management marks a pivotal step forward for Kilifi County’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of Beach goers and Water sports enthusiasts.
Opicho said participants will receive instruction on advanced diving techniques, enabling them to navigate underwater environments safely and efficiently.
