National golf team captain John Lejirma of Kenya Railways will team up with Kiambu’s Elvis Muigua, Nyali’s Adel Balala and Vetlab sports club’s Krish Beiju to represent Kenya in the upcoming All Africa Golf Team championship to be held at the Bulawayo golf club in Zimbabwe from 27th October to 2nd November 2024.
The team is riding high after their recent win in Region IV held earlier this month in Rwanda and has been training under national coach John Van Liefland for the past two months and ready for the championship.
The championship has attracted a total of 15 countries, including Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Morocco, Ghana, Tunisia, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Malawi, Seychelles among others.
“We are looking forward to our next assignment at the AAGTC in Zimbabwe. Competing against the top amateurs on the continent will be a true test of our abilities as a team. Myself, Adel, Lejirma, and Krish have been working hard individually and will continue training with our coach following our recent success,” said John Lejirma.
Kenya Golf Union (KGU) chairman David Ndung’u said the union was thrilled to see the young talents representing Kenya on such a prestigious platform.
“Their hard work and commitment have truly paid off, and we have full confidence in their abilities to compete at the highest level. This championship is not only a chance to showcase their skills but also an opportunity to foster camaraderie among African nations through sport,” said Ndung’u.
The biennial All Africa Golf Championship, considered one of the most prestigious amateur team events, was first played in 2001 and is endorsed by the R&A and the Africa Golf Confederation.
Meanwhile, adds Dennis Murimi Njiru,IMG Kenya Limited, an estimated 214 golfers to battle for supremacy at Nyali golf and country club course in Mombasa County on Saturday when six more golfers will have a chance to book their spots for the 2024 NCBA golf series grand finale to be held at Muthaiga Golf Club on November 29.
The penultimate leg of the series will see the top male and female finishers in Divisions one, two, and the overall winner in Division three together with the overall Junior winner will make the list of six from the leg to qualify for the final round.
This year’s edition, launched at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club in February, has transversed beyond Kenya, featuring tournaments in Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, underscoring NCBA’s commitment to promoting golf across East Africa.
Over 100 golfers have already qualified based on their performance in previous events, with the latest qualifiers emerging from the recent regional qualifier in Uganda last weekend at the Entebbe Golf Club.
Anselm Olweny (Men’s category) and Berna Musanabera (Women’s category) emerged victorious at Entebbe in Uganda to join their compatriots Brian Omeda (Men’s category) and Lillian Koowe (Women’s category) from the Jinja Golf Club qualifier in August and Emmanuel Wamala (Men) and Eva Lwanga (Women) who qualified from the Uganda Golf Club qualifier in June.
Nyali club captain Dinesh Sasan said they are delighted to host this leg of the series and excited for this tournament that is expected to witness remarkable golf action.
NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora said, “We are delighted to be heading back to Nyali Golf & Country Club for yet another year for this leg of the series. This is yet another opportunity for us to present golfers in the region a chance to play in the series, and it is also an opportunity for us as NCBA to connect with our customers in the region. We are therefore excited for this tournament, and we hope that we shall witness remarkable golf action and that golfers will have a great time playing at the tournament as they strive to qualify for the final showdown at Muthaiga next month.”
This event follows the Royal Nairobi Golf Club qualifying leg barely two weeks ago which saw 255 golfers turn out.
Apart from the qualifying golf event, the annual Diani charity goat derby is set to take place on Sunday, October 13 at the Diamonds Leisure Lodge golf club, in South Coast of Mombasa, Kwale County.
This year, just like on most of the previous years, NCBA will be sponsoring the event organized by the East African Women’s League (EAWL) to the tune of Ksh one million.
The event aims to raise funds that help support various initiatives in Diani and its environs including the Kwale District Eye Center Poor Patients Fund, the Ukunda Epilepsy Clinic, the Msambweni Palliative Care Unit, Kenya Society for Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA), Nimuyumba Primary School-Special Needs and Cerebral Palsy Units among others.
