Its again a rare super Saturday as Coast golf players are set for two separate major tournaments in this Kenya Navy Commander’s at the par 72 PGA-rated Baobab Ridge Course in Kilifi County and the I&M Bank Tournament at the par 71 Nyali Golf & Country Club in Mombasa.
This double tournament that will tee off simultaneously has drawn players from the Coast region, Nairobi, and upcountry Clubs, making it one of the busiest golf Saturdays at the Coast this season.
In Vipingo, the tournament to be hosted in honor of the Kenya Navy Commander Major General Paul Otieno, under the Kenya Defense Forces Golfers Association (KDFGA), has grown into one of the most respected military-civilian sporting partnerships at the Coast and has attracted 290 players.
Kenya Navy Golf Club Chairman Lt.Col. Epapra Lagat said this year’s edition is part of the ongoing Ministry of Defense wellness program to build fitness, discipline and strong civil-military ties that comes with a mouth-watering twist.
The Chairman further pointed out that the players will not only be battling for the coveted Commander’s trophy, but also chasing a once-in-a-lifetime chance to sink a hole-in-one and drive away with a brand-new car, in fact two brand-new cars are on offer on two separate par-3 holes at hole 8, a Mahindra Scorpio-N SUV by Simba Corporation and hole 17, a Mercedes Benz GLC43 Sports Tourer by Khushi Motors Mombasa.
Baobab Club Captain Less Baillie said the course is in pristine championship condition and preparations are complete with excitement very high.
“We are deeply honored to host this tournament once again. It means a lot to us and to the Navy fraternity. The course is in fantastic shape, the greens are firm and fast, and we are ready for a great show. The addition of two cars for two hole-in-ones has really lifted the mood – our par-3s are very challenging, but on a good day, anything can happen,” said Baillie.
The Captain added that the tournament will also celebrate the strong ties between the Kenya Defense Forces and the civilian community.
“Golf brings people together. The Navy has been a great friend of golf at the Coast, supporting talent and encouraging discipline through sports. We invite all golfers to come and experience Baobab Ridge at its best, “added Baillie.
The tournament will tee off at 7:00 am, followed by a colorful prize-giving ceremony where the Commander of the Kenya Navy is expected to grace as Chief Guest.
The Baobab Ridge, the only PGA-accredited course in the region, is known for its immaculate fairways, wild bush layout, fast greens and signature ocean breeze that demands accuracy and course management.
On the same day, 45 kilometers South in Mombasa County, at the iconic Nyali Course, famous for its resident vervet monkeys, giant baobabs and its challenging coastal layout, some 200 players will be battling for honors in the I&M Bank tournament.
This is an event that has become synonymous with great golf and elite networking under the theme, ‘Great Golf-Great Company-One Unforgettable Day.’
Unlike the high-stakes car chase in Vipingo, the Nyali edition will focus on networking, client engagement and pure golf enjoyment where the tournament’s tagline is, ‘Network-Connect-Enjoy and Play-Compete-Make Memories,’ captures the spirit of the day, where business leaders, I&M Bank clients and Coast golf enthusiasts will mix business with pleasure.
Club Captain Muzzahim Taib said the Club is ready for a full house and has prepared the course to offer a true test.
“We are 100% ready. Our greens team has done a fantastic job, the fairways are lush after the recent rains, and the greens are rolling beautifully. Nyali is looking its best. I&M tournaments are always popular because they bring together great competition and great networking. The weather forecast is perfect for golf in Mombasa and we expect a very strong field. We have put in place all logistics, from scoring to halfway and evening entertainment. It will be a full day of golf, with lots of prizes and giveaways from our sponsor. We welcome all golfers to come and enjoy the unique Nyali hospitality, “said Taib.
The two tournaments coming on the same day present a unique opportunity for Coast golfers to choose their challenge between the championship test and car dream at Baobab Ridge, or the social and corporate golf experience at Nyali.
Golf enthusiasts say the double-header underlines the growth of the sport at the Coast, with both Clubs reporting increased membership and participation in recent months.
And with over 250 golfers, two major sponsors, two prestigious venues and two brand-new cars on the line, this Saturday promises to be a Super Saturday for Coast golf, a day where every swing could change a golfer’s fortunes.
