Tanzania’s Hawa Wanyeche and Uganda’s Nasabu Namulondo were crowned champions of this year’s Uganda Open Golf Championship Ladies Open Silver and Bronze divisions respectively that concluded at Uganda Golf Club in Uganda located along Kitante Road and Yusuf Lule Road in the heart of Kampala City on Friday.
Wanyeche delivered a steady final round of 74 gross to finish on 77-77-74 gross for a 54-hole total of 228 gross (+12) and claim the overall Silver title by one shot.
“I’m really happy to win here. The course was tough but I just stayed patient. That 74 gross today helped a lot. Playing against such a strong Ugandan field pushed me and I’m grateful to come out on top. It feels good to bring the trophy back to Tanzania. The Ugandan girls played really well, especially Peace and Keisha. I had to stay focused on my own game. Thanks to everyone who organized this and to my team back home,” said Wanyeche.
She had to fend off a late surge from Uganda’s Peace Kabasweka who signed for the day’s best round of 73 gross, to finish tied second on 229 gross (+13), alongside Keisha Kagoro who had posted a second-round 72 gross.
Tanzania’s Neema Olomi was fourth on 235 gross (+19), while Judith Komugisha led the rest of the Ugandan challenge in fifth place on 236 gross (+20).
The Silver division featured a strong East African field with Rwanda’s Sylvie Irakoze tied ninth on 246 gross (+30), Ghana’s Hawah Musah finished tied twenty fourth on 260 gross (+44) and Nigeria’s Juliana Igbinadolor was twenty sixth on 261 gross (+45).
In the Bronze division played over 36 holes, Namulondo dominated from the start where She opened with a 62 gross and followed with 66 gross for a gross total of184 and a nett of 128, (-16) to win by 7 shots.
“I’m so excited! 62 and 66 is not something I expected. I just tried to enjoy every shot and it worked. Winning at home means a lot to me. Thank you to Uganda Golf Club and all the sponsors. Playing in front of home fans gave me confidence. I told myself to trust the process and the putts started dropping. -16 nett feels amazing. This motivates me to work even harder,” said Namulondo
Flavia Auma finished second on gross 205 gross, nett 135, (-9), while Christine Abbo was third on gross 178, nett 138 (-6).
Barbara Mbabazi took fourth slot on nett 139 (-5) and Christina Mwangi rounded out the top 5 on nett 146, (+2).
Other notable performances included Mastula Nagayi and Godlive Nayebare tied sixth on nett 147 (+3) each and Mercy Tumuhimbise who shot the low round of the day with a 68 in round two.
