It was supposed to be a day for Insurance Brokers, it ended up being a day for a Banker, and in a stunning twist that had the whole clubhouse talking.
Mombasa-based Banker Shem Aboge produced the round of his life on Friday to win the Association of Insurance Brokers of Kenya (AIBK) Golf Tournament, beating 124 golfers to be crowned Overall winner with a massive 47 Stable ford points off handicap 23.
That points, on a day when most golfers were struggling to reach 36, Aboge was playing like a man possessed, steady off the tee, sharp with his irons, ice-cold on the greens, and it was not just a win, it was a statement, and it was his major victory of the year.
For Aboge, who spends his weekdays crunching numbers in the banking world, Friday was about freedom, focus and belief.

But this was no ordinary Banker, Aboge is the Stanbic Bank Coast Region Sector Head based in Mombasa, a man who understands risk, reads numbers, manages big clients, and leads teams across the entire Coast, and on Friday, he brought all that boardroom discipline to the fairway and it paid off in gold.
“This is my biggest win this year, and I am so humbled. To win overall in such a big field of golfers, in such a tournament, is something I will never forget,” said Aboge, clutching his trophy and smiling from ear to ear.
“I came here just to enjoy my golf, to play my game and to have fun with friends. I did not come expecting such results. But everything just clicked. My drives were straight, my approach shots were close, and my putter was hot and my secret was patience. In banking, you learn patience. You learn not to panic when things go wrong. Golf is the same. I had a bad hole, I told myself, forget it, next hole. I stayed calm, I stayed focused, and the points kept coming,” He added.
“I want to thank AIBK for organizing a wonderful tournament, the club for a beautiful course, and my fellow golfers for the great competition. This trophy is for my family, my colleagues in Banking, and everyone who believed in me. This is my major victory this year, and I will cherish it,” said Aboge.
It was a win that even the brokers had to applaud, a banker had come to their party and taken the biggest prize home.
But Aboge’s victory at Nyali was about more than just golf, it was about how modern Banking is done in Mombasa, not only behind a desk, but on the fairway.
In today’s world, clients are not won in boardrooms alone, they are won in conversations, they are won in trust, they are won over four hours of walking together, laughing together, competing together, and being real together.
And there is no better place for that than Nyali Golf & Country Club.
From Hole 1 to Hole 18, Aboge was not just playing golf he was building relationships, a handshake on the first tee, a joke on the second fairway, a word of encouragement after a bad shot, a shared story about business, about family, about Mombasa and that is how trust is built, that is how a banker becomes more than a banker, he becomes a friend.
Golf, after all, is the longest job interview in the world, you cannot hide your character for four hours, you show patience when you miss a putt, you show honesty when you count your own score, you show humility when you lose a ball, you show grace when your opponent sinks a long putt, clients watch all that, and they remember.
As Stanbic Bank Coast Region Sector Head, Aboge knows this game well, His job is about sectors tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, real estate, trade, SMEs- the engine of the Coast economy, and those clients on the golf course every weekend, they are insurance brokers, hoteliers, clearing agents, doctors, lawyers, developers, and to meet them, you must be where they are.
And then comes Hole 19, the Clubhouse, and if the fairway is where relationships start, this Hole is where deals are sealed.
After the last putt drops, the real banking begins, over a cold drink, over nyama choma, over laughter and stories, business happens without suits, without boardroom pressure, without PowerPoint.
A client who would never pick your call on a Monday morning will sit with you for an hour at Hole 19 on a Friday evening, a broker who saw you stay calm after a bad hole will trust you to stay calm with his money, and a business owner who saw you shake hands and smile after losing a hole will trust you to handle his account with integrity.
That is the magic Aboge understands, He does not chase clients, He walks with them, He plays with them, He laughs with them, and by the time they reach Hole 19, they are no longer just contacts, they are friends, they are partners, they are clients for life.
On Friday, as he lifted the Overall winner’s trophy, Aboge had not just won a tournament, He had won hearts, He had won trust, He had won clients, the Stanbic way, Quietly, humbly, and with patience.
Behind Aboge, the men’s category produced its own drama, as Kamau Kuria, playing off handicap 24, emerged as Men winner with 39 points a solid, composed round that kept him ahead of a charging field, while hot on his heels was Dr. J.M. Muthuuri, also off 24, who finished as Men’s runner-up with 37 points.
The ladies did not disappoint, Caroline Munyi, off handicap 26, was crowned Lady Winner with an excellent 41 points, the second-best score of the entire day after Aboge.
Her round was full of confidence, courage and brilliant putting, while handicap 22 Nancy Gathunga finished as Runner-up with 36 points, capping a fine day for the ladies’ section.
The tournament is famous for celebrating every golfer, not just the big hitters, and Friday was no exception.
Wambu Wainaina proved that age is just a number, winning Best Senior prize (65 years and above) with 37 points off handicap 25, as the senior star rolled back the years with a masterclass in course management.
Young Ayman Hassan was the star of the future, winning the Junior prize with 37 points off handicap 27, a performance that had the older golfers nodding in approval and whispering, “Watch this boy.”
Peter Mukuria won the High Handicap prize with 36 points off handicap 29, showing that golf is not about handicap, it is about heart.
Guest winner Felix Kandie, playing off a low handicap of 10, showed true class to win the Guest prize with 37 points.
In the special category for members, Bernard Tubei emerged as AIBK winner with 34 points off handicap 39, holding off a strong challenge from Wangechi Wachira, who finished as runner-up with 32 points off handicap 33.
Tubei’s win was celebrated loudly by his fellow brokers, and at least the brokers’ flag was flying high, even if the overall trophy had gone to a Banker.
Club Chairman Michael Sangoro said the day was a triumph of organization, fellowship and the spirit of golf.
“We are delighted. Large numbers of golfers turned up, the weather was beautiful, the course was in excellent condition, and the golf was of the highest quality. AIBK have been wonderful partners. They brought energy, they brought numbers, they brought friendship. And when you have numbers of golfers on a day like Friday competing with such passion, it shows that golf in Kenya is growing stronger every day. Aboge played unbelievable golf. His result points are not easy. It takes skill, it takes focus, it takes courage. As chairman, I want to congratulate him, and congratulate all our winners – men, ladies, seniors, juniors, guests and AIBK members. Everyone played their part. Golf is about networking, about friendship, about business and about community. Today, brokers met bankers, doctors met juniors, seniors mentored the young. That is the magic of golf. That is why we love this game. We thank AIBK, we thank all the players, we thank our supporters, our staff and our members. We look forward to hosting you again next year and maybe next year, a broker will take the overall trophy back,” said Sangoro.
As the sun set over Nyali and the prize-giving came to an end, one thing was clear, ‘Friday belonged to Shem Aboge,’ a Banker, a 23-handicapper, a 47-point hero.
And in a tournament organized by Insurance brokers, the Banker had insured his name in the history books, with his major victory of the year.
From the fairway to Hole 19, from client to friend, from Banker to champion, Shem Aboge did not just win a trophy, He won the day.
