Eight Kenyan and Five Lady top leading Amateurs are battling at the South African’s Leopard Creek Country Club Course against their colleagues from across Africa in the Inaugural Africa Amateur Golf Championship that ends on Saturday.
The four days prestigious event promises an intense competition and camaraderie where Kenya is being represented by formidable players carefully selected based on their performance in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
The Kenyan Male team comprises Dennis Maara from Limuru Country Club, Ebill Omollo, Mikael Kihara, and Steve Orinda from Vetlab Sports Club, Sammy Mulama from Mombasa Golf Club, Elvis Muigua from Kiambu Golf Club, James Kamenchu from Royal Nairobi Golf Club, and Adel Balala from Nyali Golf & Country Club.
Under the leadership of David Ndung’u, Tournaments Director of the Kenya Golf Union (KGU), these players are primed to showcase their skills on the international stage.
The stakes are high as the winner of the Africa Amateur Championship secures an automatic slot in the prestigious Open Championship in July, along with an invitation to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competition.
In tandem with the Men’s event, the Africa Amateur Women’s Invitation features five talented Kenyan ladies namely Sarah Khanyereri, Naomi Wafula, Ashley Awuor, Mercy Nyanchama, and Channelle Wangari.
The victor of the Africa Amateur Women’s Invitation will earn a direct entry to the AIG Open Championship, among other notable accolades.
The event’s invitation features 20 women from the region of Africa competing in a 54-hole stroke play format with the winner receiving exemptions into several premium events.
The introduction of this new event complements existing amateur championships jointly organized by The R&A in Asia-Pacific and Latin America and will enable players from Africa to play at the highest level, as well as creating a pathway for African golfers to develop and become an inspiration for others to follow.
The championship will also build on an Africa High Performance Programme established last year by The R&A and delivered to players and coaches in African countries as part of a wider effort to develop golf and provide support to players aspiring to reach elite levels of the sport.
