A Ten year old golfer Lucas kampa received a standing ovation after being declared the overall winner in this year’s Annual Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers (KAHC) golf tournament staged at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.
The handicap 24 youngster of Diamond Leisure Golf Resort at Diani in South Coast of Mombasa, Kwale County registered an excellent score of 44 stableford points to claim the day’s lead in the 18 holes tourney attended by 156 golfers in the day long 18 holes tournament.
While most golfers in the day brought unsatisfactory results, complaining of a challenging course coupled with wild winds across the pristine course, Kampa remained resilient and only focused to his game with an extreme attention to details.
Starting from the back nine, Kampa had a false start when his first shot landed just few meters away from the 10th tee short and felt angry but this did not deter his ambition that he was not only a small boy in the course but a champion in the making.
At the end of the day , Kampa proved the Veterans wrong when he recorded 21 and 23 points in both nines after sinking a rare birdie at the par four-hole seven, on top of seven level pars despite some mixed pot of bogey shots in the rest of the holes.
In his winning speech at the podium, the confident and composed boy started by thanking the Club, Organizers, his team partners , the sponsors and above all his Parents for their support.
“Iam so happy for the win today .It’s my major victory since I started playing some few years back. Am always on and off the course because of studies but will continue playing my best and looking forward to enjoying more competitive tournaments, thank you all,” Said Kampa.
