GOLF NEW-Sea-link Mombasa Golf Club’s Captain Gitonga hosts his Prize giving tourney this weekend;

-More than 180 golfers expected in the two days event marking his two year’s leadership in Office;

-Elsewhere over 200 golfers expected at the KCB Golf Series in Eldoret  while Ruiru and Vetlab has the Club’s Lady Captain’s Prize (Sue Mukururi) and the Chiropractic Physiotherapy Health Centre Golf Tournament respectively;

Mombasa Golf Club’s par 71 Sea-Link Course in Mombasa is set to host the Club’s Captain’s (James Gitonga Wachira) Prize Golf tournament on Friday and Saturday, 17th, February, 2024.

An estimated 185 golfers are expected to participate in the two days much anticipated tournament featuring players from the home Club, Coast Golf Clubs, others from across the Country Clubs, Sponsors and Friends of the Captain with valid handicaps.

Captain James Gitonga Wachira said the tournament organized to bid him farewell after his two year’s tenure in office starts as a curtain raiser on Friday, February 16th to be followed by the main one on Saturday, February, 17th and the draw has not been closed by Thursday.

Gitonga said he was happy ending the second term on a high note while expressing great hope that Golfers will turn up in large numbers and looking forward to their participation since corporate sponsors have come in big support.

“I would like to thank the wonderful team of the Club and Members for being supportive during my leadership. The club has been vibrant throughout the year with improved record of golf events from various corporates including Kenya Ports Authority and also happy to have led the Tannahill team which for the first time finished second and the uniforms for the team was sponsored by NCBA,”said Gitonga.

He added that for the first time during his tenure Barry Cup was played 54 holes in a 3 days event from the traditional 36 holes in 2 day event under his leadership and hoped that the Club would continue growing to excellence and attract more memberships and Corporate Supporters.

The club’s immediate past Club Captain Lawrence Odhiambo will be the first to bless the course on Friday for the morning section from 6.50 am alongside the flight of C.Tollo, S.Dhodia and R.dhodia while the afternoon group will start with Machakos Country Club’s three ball team of J.Kitulu, S. Kisevu and M. Lusenaka at 11.30 am.

Club Chairman Paul Munyao will also be in the afternoon group at 12.00 noon playing alongside T. Githaiga, E.Kiptoo and K. Kiarie while the four ball team of Maj. E. Lagat, Dr. K. Kibett, Maj. J. Mochanga and E. Bett will be the last flight of the day teeing off at 1.30pm.

Club Green Keeper Tirus Githaiga has assured all golfers that the Course is in an excellent condition, playing well.

He said golfers must be aware of the unpredictable strong winds blowing from the nearby Indian Ocean waters to the course that may affect their swings.

“But otherwise I have placed pin positions around all greens in friendly spots to make the day’s event more enjoyable and hope that all players will have a good golfing experience of the course this weekend, “said Githaiga.

The tournament is being jointly supported by several corporations among them, Kenya Maritime Authority, Eco Bank, Britam, Artha, Stima Sacco, and Cfao.

Others are Inuka Africa, Multichoice, Nulook, Chai, Ketepa, Certified Homes, Ketepa Maisha, and friends of the Captain.

Meanwhile,adds BRIAN JAYSINS-OXYGENE PR, the second leg of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour will be held at the par 72 Eldoret Golf Club this Saturday as the series makes its way to the Rift Valley region.

A huge field of 200 top amateur golfers is expected to headline the eagerly awaited tournament that will see action get underway at 7:00 am while the afternoon tee will kick-off at noon at the 9-hole course surrounded by huge trees, several dog-legged fairways, and excellent greens.

Eldoret Club Captain Mathew Koech said, “For the second year running, this amazing club will be part of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour. I cannot wait to see all the golfers who have signed up for this tournament brave the greens. I expect a good outing and I hope that through our partnership with KCB, we will continue to elevate the sport.”

From the weekend’s action, the top two teams will book a slot in the tour’s grand finale slated for December 6th, 2024.

Currently, Prisca Jebet, Rishi Dodhia, Florence Karimi, Orpha Wamaitha, Captain James Gitonga, Elijah Ibua, Gabriel, Gakuo, and Peter Kimanga have secured their places having triumphed in Mombasa during the first leg.

In a bid to further enhance the game, KCB will on Sunday host a juniors’ and ladies’ clinic at the same venue.

Additionally, the bank will engage in a tree-planting initiative at the club, ensuring sustainability is at the heart of the golf series.

KCB Group Director of Marketing and Communications, Rosalind Gichuru said, “Through the KCB golf series, we intend to widen our reach compared to last year’s tour and Eldoret provides a good opportunity to onboard budding golfers into the game. We aim to make this sport as accessible as possible.

After the Eldoret edition, the tour will resume action on April 11th, at the Kakamega Golf Club for its third leg.

KCB will however sponsor Club nites at the Railways and Nandi Bears Club in March and early April respectively.

Elsewhere this weekend, Ruiru sports Club will be hosting the Lady Captain’s Prize (Sue Mukururi) and Vetlab Sports has the Chiropractic Physiotherapy Health Centre Golf Tournament.
